Mardi Himal Trek

Overview And Highlights

Mardi Himal Trek is a newly opened tea house trekking route in Nepal. It belongs to the Annapurna conservation project in the Annapurna region. When you visit Mardi Himal Trek you will see the massive Annapurna Himalayan range combination of cultural discoveries and snow-capped peaks.

A great alternative to Annapurna Base Camp Trek!

Located just east of the main Annapurna region (ABC), it is a well-kept Himalayan secret of Nepal. Due to its relative remoteness and less promotion, very few trekkers make their way to the Mardi Himal Base Camp, majestically located at the base of Mardi Himal and stunning Machhapuchhre. The impact of mass tourism is yet to flourish in the region.

The Mardi Himal Trek goes through a narrow winding trail and enters deep into rhododendron forest until you climb out to 3,300m elevation. As you rise, the forest line gradually gives way to alpine scrubs and mountain landscapes, with tempting views of Mardhi Himal, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli.

From high camp, we hike up to Mardi Himal Base Camp and finally to the upper viewpoint, which offers you a complete solitary trail filled with emerald forests, intriguing villages, lush valleys, terraced farmlands, rivers, and tantalizing Himalayas. The returning journey takes 2 days staying at different villages – so you don’t have to backtrack via the same route.

The tea house and homestay along the Mardi Himal Trek Route are basic: offering you limited services (but improving). However, the warmness and hospitality of the locals are really intriguing.

If you wish to trek Mardi Himal in winter, do check the availability of tea houses.

In short, Mardi Himal Trek is a complete Himalayan experience in Nepal where we stay in the local tea houses, taste local cuisine, admire the Himalayan peaks, and explore the diversities that nature brings with a rise in altitude.

 Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty

The Mardi Himal trek is considered a moderate to challenging trek. The trek takes you through rugged terrain and requires a good level of physical fitness, endurance, and some previous trekking experience.

The highest point of the trek is Mardi Himal Base Camp, which is at an altitude of 4,500 meters above sea level. Altitude sickness can be a concern, and it is important to acclimatize properly to avoid any altitude-related problems.

The trail can be steep and narrow in some places, with some sections requiring you to scramble over rocks and boulders. The trek also involves crossing several rivers and streams, and you may encounter snow and ice on the trail during the winter months.

The Mardi Himal Trek can be a challenging but rewarding experience for those who are physically fit and prepared for the demands of the trek. It is recommended that you train before the trek and consult with a travel doctor before embarking on this adventure.

Which month is best for Mardi Himal Trek?

The best time to go for the Mardi Himal trek is during the months of March to May (spring) and September to November (autumn). During these months, the weather is usually stable, with clear skies and mild temperatures, making it the ideal time to enjoy the beautiful mountain views and experience the local culture and wildlife. However, the trek is possible throughout the year, but you should be prepared for different weather conditions during the off-season.

Food and Accommodation during the Mardi Himal Trek

During the Mardi Himal trek, you'll find a variety of food and accommodation options along the trail. In the lower elevation areas, you'll come across teahouses that provide comfortable lodging and basic meals like rice, dal, chapati, and vegetable curries. As you go higher, the accommodation will be more basic, and the food options may be limited to local cuisine.

It is advisable to carry some snacks and energy bars with you as the availability of food may vary depending on the season and location. It's also essential to carry a water bottle and purification tablets or a filtration system to ensure you have access to clean drinking water.

While the quality and variety of food and accommodation may vary along the Mardi Himal trek, there are sufficient options available to make the trek comfortable and enjoyable.
